8 choreographers to present original works in intimate presentations

September 29, 2009. Toronto ON… Ballet Jörgen Canada is pleased to open its studios and invite audiences to experience intimate Ballet in the Studio performances in October.  Eight rising Canadian choreographers along with Artistic Director Bengt Jörgen will present exciting short works as part of Ballet Jörgen Canada’s Creative Centre.

The first Ballet in the Studio program, Solos & Duets, will show the new work of five choreographers who created their works on Ballet Jörgen Canada dancers over the past month.  Participating in this season’s program are Nancy Greyeyes, Elizabeth Dawn Snell, Artistic Director of Artists’ Play Dance Theatre, Pamela Rasbach, Artistic Director of Typecast Dance Company, and Josh Beamish, Director of Move:  the company.   Lastly, our very own company dancer Hiroto Saito has choreographed two pieces for this program.

Ballet Jörgen Canada will then present its traditional Ballet in the Studio installment this fall featuring exciting works which challenge the conventions of ballet and contribute to the company’s innovative Original Dance repertoire.  Clifford E. Lee Choreography Award winner D.A. Hoskinsa little pink in Black & White, and Halifax dance maker Ruth-Ellen Kroll Jackson’s Happiness is an Inch Closer will open this studio program.  Both of these are commissioned works which made their mainstage world premieres in Halifax this April.  Malgorzata Nowacka, Artistic Director of The Chimera Project, has choreographed the Company’s newest commissioned work, Icarus.  Ballet Jörgen Canada’s Artistic Director, Bengt Jörgen’s Swedish Songs will close the program.

Widely recognized for its innovation, warmth, humor and beauty, Ballet Jörgen Canada is the only major Canadian ballet company with a repertoire exclusively of original works.  With over two decades of innovation in creating opportunities for Canadian choreographers and engagement with communities in outreach and educational activities, Ballet Jörgen Canada remains true to the vision of its founders, Bengt Jörgen and Susan Bodie.  Ballet Jörgen Canada’s educational activities range from its long-time collaboration with George Brown College in Toronto to elementary school programming that brings ballet to children across the country.  In addition, Ballet Jörgen Canada’s annual touring brings ballet performances to over 50,000 people from coast to coast in Canada and northern USA, sharing the experience of ballet with more communities in Canada than any other dance company.  With a ‘hub’ in Halifax, Nova Scotia, and centres in Ottawa and Kitchener-Waterloo, Ballet Jörgen Canada is truly Canada’s local ballet company.
