[Toronto, ON – July 24, 2014] Talented dancers from across Canada and around the world will present two new works by Toronto choreographers Hanna Kiel and Mafa Makhubalo on August 1st, 2014 at 5pm. The Junior Company will also showcase excerpts from Cinderella and from Robert Desrosier’s celebrated Bouffonia. Admission is Pay What You Can – all donations go to the Scholarship Fund.
The performance, to be held at Ballet Jörgen’s George Brown College studio at 5 pm, is the culmination of five weeks of intense work for the Junior Company’s young dancers, who are all in the process of transitioning into professional dance careers. Ballet Jörgen’s unique program is designed to give dancers the experience and understanding needed to succeed in the professional dance world. An intensive combination of advanced dance training and ongoing performances effectively prepares young professionals for the demands of working in a dance company. “This is highly professional training and I am learning a lot, especially about myself as a dancer, which helps me to improve,” said 2014 Junior Company member Monica Lima. “I particularly like that each of us gets to learn individual roles in different choreographies. Being involved in the development of my role really is the artistic learning experience I was looking for”. To join the Junior Company, dancers must audition in person or via video link.
Junior Company members pursue careers with diverse dance organizations. At Ballet Jörgen, all apprentice positions are filled from within the Junior Company and, at the moment, ten of the company’s dancers are Junior Company program alumni.
