For Immediate Release

Canada’s Ballet Jörgen 2016 touring season begins with performances of original Canadian ballets in Northern Ontario. The tour will then continue across Canada featuring an all-new Canadian production of Sleeping Beauty.

[January 12, 2016] Canada’s Ballet Jörgen opens the 2016 performing season with a program of Canadian made ballets including Robert Desrosiers’ mesmerizing Bouffonia in Kirkland Lake, Ontario on Thursday January 14th.  Committed to showcasing ballet in a Canadian context, Canada’s Ballet Jörgen exclusively features original productions created by Canadian-based artists.  The Northern Ontario tour, which also includes performances in Cobolt and Deep River, will showcase original creations by Allen Kaeja, Hanna Kiel, Derek Sangster, and Robert Desrosiers along with excerpts from Sleeping Beauty.

The Globe & Mail writes; “Robert Desrosiers is back with a vengeance for Canada’s Ballet Jorgen, he has crafted the delightful Bouffonia, his homage to old-world clowns inspired by commedia dell’arte, 19th-century European opera and silent movies.”

The new interpretation of Sleeping Beauty produced by Canada’s Ballet Jörgen re-imagines the classical ballet from the perspective of contemporary audiences. Inspired by a native Saskatchewan tale, the ballet is set in the Garden of Eden and is the story of how the Rose got its thorns. After its successful fall tour in Ontario, Quebec and Newfoundland, Sleeping Beauty will open its western tour in Saskatoon, SK on January 31st. Eagerly anticipated after earning top marks from audiences and critics the winter/spring tour of Sleeping Beauty will reach Alberta, British Columbia, New Brunswick, Nova Scotia, Ontario, Prince Edward Island, Saskatchewan and the USA.

The Dance Current noted that the program was; “accessible, designed withimpact and definitely suitable for families and younger audiences.”

As part of its commitment to making ballet more accessible, Canada’s Ballet Jörgen delivers extensive community and education programming in every community where it performs. This includes master classes, community performance events and a Sleeping Beauty Youth Education Program; a program that lets local dance students perform children’s roles in every community allowing young dancers to appear alongside the company’s professional dancers giving these young performers the thrill of a lifetime.

“There is an extraordinary depth of demand in communities across Canada for artistic performances that embrace local values, talent and traditions. Canada’s Ballet Jörgen is committed to providing an artistic mirror reflecting the best of each locality in which it performs”, said Bengt Jörgen, co-founder and director of the Company.
