Canada’s Ballet Jörgen enriches our lives by bringing professional ballet to communities - large and small, urban and rural.

Canada’s Ballet Jörgen delivers programming in all 10 of Canada’s provinces as well as into the United States. Every year the Company tours from coast to coast travelling over 50,000 km to reach underserved communities. Known for the warmth and beauty of its productions, CBJ reaches every province, delivering more than 1,500 performances, ballet classes and community engagement events involving over 60,000 participants annually.

We Deliver Programming in Three Key Areas

Traditional stage performances take place in theatre venues and include a number of different ballets, such as:

  • Swan Lake
  • The Nutcracker: A Canadian Tradition

One act or shorter ballets:

Education Programs: the dance training and performance experience for aspiring dancers is made up of 14 different programs, which include:

  • Apprentice Program – A program designed for emerging professional ballet dancers at the beginning of their careers
  • Junior Company – A simulated Company environment training program designed for emerging professional ballet dancers who are transitioning into the professional world
  • George Brown Dance – 3 post-secondary dance programs (ballet, contemporary, jazz/hip hop), which are delivered in partnership with George Brown College
  • Mentorship Program – A post graduate one-year program working with Canada’s Ballet Jörgen or Human Body Expressions with Hanna Kiel
  • Four summer dance training programs covering ages 9 – 24
  • Canada-wide Master Class and Workshop programs
  • Canada-wide Local Participant Program where local dance students can audition to perform youth parts in major productions with the Company
  • The Nutcracker Touring Cast where talented students will tour with the Company to perform youth parts in The Nutcracker: A Canadian Tradition

Dance for Everyone: workshops, performances and events right in the community and digital programming, which includes a variety of presentations and events, both live and online, such as:

  • One-act story ballet performances in school gyms
  • Ballet 101 – An introductory and interactive presentation of ballet for libraries, seniors’ homes, schools and community centres.
  • Creation for film, video, YouTube and other electronic formats
  • Commission and research projects for using technology in dance
  • Pre-and-post show talk, including question and answer periods
  • Pointe shoe workshop
  • Dance workshop for non-dancers
  • Visits backstage, meet the dancers
  • Question and answer periods
  • Performances in a range of non-theatre settings, including stores, transportation hubs, parks, hospitals, community centres and office atriums.

Our History

Canada's Ballet Jörgen (CBJ) was founded in 1987 to support the development and dissemination of Canadian choreography and, since its inception, CBJ has exclusively danced works created for the company by Canadian and Canada based choreographers.
