[Halifax NS – May 21, 2015] Canada’s Ballet Jörgen (CBJ) returns for the third time this season to Atlantic Canada, performing a ballet popular among young audiences: The Velveteen Rabbit. Choreographed by award-winning dance-maker, Kathleen Rea, The Velveteen Rabbit will be performed in New Brunswick, Nova Scotia and Newfoundland & Labrador. The company will also present interactive performance-events in libraries in St. John’s, NL, and teach a number of master classes on the tour.
The three week tour, which spans from May 19th through June 7th, is focused on reaching youth as part of CBJ’s goal of allowing all young Atlantic Canadians to see a live ballet performance at least twice before they graduate high school. The tour will take the company to 13 communities including Perth-Andover, Centreville, and Gagetown in New Brunswick; Guysborough, Ingonish, Westmount and Sydney in Nova Scotia; and Pearl, St. John’s, Mount Pearl, Carbonear, Bay Roberts and Paradise in NL.
This dance interpretation of The Velveteen Rabbit is not only entertaining, but it also underlines the importance of friendship, love and the discovery of what is real. The company dancers bring to life this renowned story, which consists of a young boy and his love for a stuffed rabbit that eventually comes alive. The Velveteen Rabbit was the most popular of the thirty children’s books written by Margery Williams, and highlights important life values for readers of all ages. As the wise character Skin Horse says, “Real isn’t how you are made. It’s the thing that happens to you. When a child really loves you for a long, long time… then you become real.” Seeing the characters brought to life on the stage, filled with humour and charm, engages both young and old alike.
“Dear Velveteen Rabbit,
I know you always wanted to know everything about real. Real is a life of being able to do all sorts of things. Real is to laugh every day. Real is a feeling deep inside. Real is to hope for the future. Real is to live every moment. Real is to dream for tomorrow. Real is inspired for today. Real is love beyond words.
From your friend, The Horse”
