Company to perform in every province

[Toronto, ON – August 18, 2014] Canada’s Ballet Jörgen’s 2014-2015 season will see the company perform in every single Canadian province, showcasing the company’s commitment to providing Canadians, coast to coast, with the opportunity to experience first-rate classical ballet.

In particular, northern communities in British Columbia, Ontario, Québec and Labrador will have many opportunities to enjoy the season’s program, which is designed to delight young and old, balletomanes and new fans alike. The company will perform two full-length classical ballets – Cinderella and the popular holiday classic The Nutcracker – along with a children’s production – The Velveteen Rabbit – and a program of modern ballets – Bouffonia, Yet and Séance – showcasing exceptional Canadian choreographers.

“We are committed to building communities across Canada through the shared experience of professional ballet,” explained Ballet Jörgen Founder and Creative Director Bengt Jörgen. “Seeing Canadians in far-flung towns enjoying a unique cultural event inspires us and is deeply satisfying.”

Season Details
The season’s feature ballet is the company’s celebrated production of Cinderella, which will premiere on the Royal Winnipeg Ballet Series in Winnipeg on February 7th. Choreographed by Bengt Jörgen, with costumes by Stratford’s Robert Doyle and set design by Glenn Davidson,  Ballet Jörgen’s production  is adapted from European folk tales of the 1600s. Cinderella will be performed to live music in Thunder Bay and Halifax through partnerships with the Thunder Bay Symphony and Symphony Nova Scotia.

Margery Williams’ beloved children’s story The Velveteen Rabbit will premiere in Toronto on October 5th. Choreographed by Kathleen Rea and set to an original score by Toronto composer Ivan Barbotin, this fairy tale teaches young people about unconditional love and about the importance of listening to one’s internal voice. The ballet is designed to be performed both in school gymnasiums as well as in theatres and will be staged in Ontario and Atlantic Canada.

Robert Desrosiers tour de force Bouffonia, which premiered to great acclaim last season, will return along with Allen Kaeja’s Yet and Malgorzata Nowacka’s Séance for performances in Toronto and Nova Scotia. Titled Ballet 360, this program of contemporary ballets, demonstrates Ballet Jörgen’s commitment to providing Canadian choreographers with unique opportunities to develop and stage new productions.

The Nutcracker, A Canadian Tradition, will grace stages throughout Ontario in November and December. Born from a collaboration with the McMichael Canadian Art Collection, this special ballet transports The Nutcracker to a small 19th century town in Upper Canada, brought to life through the magic of dance and stunning 30-foot backdrops and sets adapted from the paintings of Group of Seven members Franklin Carmichael, Tom Thomson and L.L. FitzGerald. The Nutcracker, A Canadian Tradition will be performed to live music in Kitchener through a partnership with the Kitchener-Waterloo Symphony.
