[Toronto, ON – March 3, 2016] Canada’s Ballet Jörgen (CBJ) is pleased to announce the presentation of a major new production of Sleeping Beauty, which will be performed March 24 and March 26 at 7:30 pm, as well as March 27 at 2:00 pm at the Betty Oliphant Theatre in Toronto.

CBJ’s production of Sleeping Beauty takes inspiration from Charles Perrault’s “La Belle au bois dormant” and the Brothers Grimm’s “Little Briar Rose.” Set to Pyotr Ilyich Tchaïkovsky’s magnificent score, this elegant production seamlessly balances many of the beloved passages from Marius Petipa’s nineteenth century St. Petersburg production with beautiful original choreography, bringing new life to this storied work for contemporary audiences.

“We saw Sleeping Beauty for the first time and came away enchanted. Everything was perfect – dancers, choreography, costumes, set design and of course the music.” – Marie Marchand, Canada’s Ballet Jörgen patron

The production was conceived and choreographed by Ballet Jörgen’s Artistic Director and CEO Bengt Jörgen, who is recognized for his ability to bring classical ballet to life for new generations of dance lovers. Dora Mavor Moore Award winners Camellia Koo (Set and Costumes Design) and Rebecca Picherack (Lighting Design) join the production team to create a magical world filled with flowers, thorns, birds and enchantment.

The Toronto performances of Sleeping Beauty are part of a cross-Canada tour spanning nine provinces and are designed to include young dancers from local communities. The young local dancers will have the opportunity to perform roles alongside the company’s professional dancers.

The creation and presentation of Sleeping Beauty is made possible by a generous gift from Margaret and David Fountain.

Toronto performances are made possible by National Presenting Partner BMO Financial Group, the Ontario Cultural Attractions Fund, and Toronto programming partners Toronto Arts Council and George Brown College.

Tickets are available now. Prices begin at $40 for adults and $34 for students/children (HST included). Purchase tickets online at balletjorgen.ticketpro.ca or call the box office at: 416.964.5148.
