CBJ’s 2018-2019 Season Announced!

Coppélia National Tour

Canada’s Ballet Jörgen’s 31st season will feature a Canada wide tour of the beloved comedy Coppélia: A Comedy with Love. Coppélia is a complete re-imagination of the world’s only surviving comedic classical ballet. It is a daring, bold and funny story that takes us into the mysterious mind of Dr. Coppélius, a lonely and disillusioned toy maker who wishes he could bring a perfect doll to life. CBJ’s contemporary retelling of the story has been lauded as one of the best balletic representations of fantastical storytelling the world over.

Choreographed by Bengt Jörgen and set to the original score by Leo Delibes, CBJ’s production of Coppélia originally premiered in 2001 and is an international co-production between Canada’s Ballet Jörgen and The Hong Kong Ballet.

The company’s 2018-2019 tour of Coppélia will begin in Cambridge in September 2018 and includes stops in seven Canadian provinces and Wyoming.

“The entire Jörgen company fills the stage with such exquisite life you are swept along for an entertaining ride… A spirited and memorable production of Coppélia – I loved every moment of it.”
Gary Smith, Hamilton Spectator

The Nutcracker: A Canadian Tradition 2018 Tour

Canada’s Ballet Jörgen’s 2018-2019 season will also include its annual tour of The Nutcracker: A Canadian Tradition. Choreographed by Bengt Jörgen to Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky’s beloved score, the ballet is set in and around Algonquin Park in 1912 and features Trillium flowers, loons and other distinct Canadian representations replacing the traditional Nutcracker dances. Designed by award-winning designer Sue LePage, the sets and costumes take audiences on a grand journey through northern landscapes filled with snowflakes, Mounties, raccoons, chipmunks, bears and other creatures of the woods.

This delightful re-working of the timeless classic is born from a collaboration with Kleinberg Ontario’s world-renowned McMichael Canadian Art Collection. The Nutcracker: A Canadian Tradition features backdrops and other elements from Canada’s 20th Century landscape artists – Franklin Carmichael’s Church and Houses at Bisset (1931), Tom Thomson’s Snow in the Woods (1916) and L.L. FitzGerald’s Trees and Wildflowers (1922).

The Nutcracker tour will begin with four performances across Saskatchewan in November 2018 before returning for a month-long tour of Ontario.

Tickets will go on sale in the spring of 2018!
