“IN HÄUS has become an annual event that fills with both current and aspiring dancers, as well as alumni…It reinforces our dedication to strong community and commitment to our student success.”

George Brown Dance is kicking off its performance season on December 12 & 13 with IN HÄUS 2019, an annual showcase of new creations choreographed by select GBD alumni. This year’s choreographers are Jamaica Fraser, Madi Gibson, Hannah Drover, Jenna Bee, and Alison Viegas. “Our alumni really integrate all their past studies from our programs when creating new works,” shares GBD Associate Program Director, Derek Sangster. “This usually ends in a very diversified program.”

The alumni choreographers are working with current GBD students selected by audition for the George Brown Dance Ensemble. The showcase offers prospective students and families a wonderful opportunity to visit the GBD studios, observe the creative works of GBD’s talented alumni, and talk with students, graduates, and faculty. “We love swinging our doors open to this free event,” expresses Sangster. “It is open to anyone considering joining one of our programs and allows for a practical experience of what GBD offers.”

This year’s showcase will feature the work of the program’s first-ever Contemporary Mentorship student, Alison Viegas. This new comprehensive mentorship program under GBD faculty member Hanna Kiel offers technique classes, composition classes, and a personally designed program plan designed to meet the student’s creative objectives and facilitate a transition into professional choreographic work. “It has been wonderful to expand our mentorship outreach to include both work with Canada’s Ballet Jörgen, as well as this new Contemporary stream,” says Sangster. Alison Viegas will be showing the new work she has been developing during her first term in this program.

GBD looks forward to opening its doors to a wide audience and sharing the diverse and rich offerings of this year’s alumni choreographers. “IN HÄUS has become an annual event that fills with both current and aspiring dancers, as well as alumni,” reflects Sangster. “It reinforces our dedication to strong community and commitment to our student success.”

IN HÄUS is a free performance. Shows will be held at 5pm on December 12 & 13 at our studios: George Brown College, Casa Loma Campus, 160 Kendal Avenue, Building C, Studio C, Toronto, ON.
